Dear FGCU Parent,
On behalf of our Student Services staff I want to welcome you to FGCU. Our office provides counseling, health, career, testing, wellness education and adaptive services for students with disabilities. Through these services, we look forward to being an integral part of your students’ well-being and success. This is an exciting time for all of us; your student, you as parents, and us as student services professionals.
New students to FGCU face the challenges of adjusting to a higher education environment and parents face the challenge of supporting students in their transition. Students have to learn to manage the many opportunities and choices of independent university life. Parents must cope with their own “shift of responsibility”, as they become more like advisors to their student. You may experience difficult feelings, e.g. sadness or anxiety, as you see your student “off to college”. Whatever your experience, know that you are not alone and that the university provides many helpful services and personnel to assist you and your student.
Please contact our office regarding the Student Services mentioned at 590-7950, the Dean of Students Office at 590-7900, or the Parent Office at 590-7744 if you have any questions about the services available to assist your student in successfully adjusting to the challenges of higher education. Again, we welcome you and your student to the FGCU community and wish you both a successful and enriching experience.
Sincerely yours,
Jon Brunner, Ph.D.
