 Remedial Student Parent Guide

Hello!

If you’ve been referred to this page, it’s because you were admitted to the university in need of sharpening some of your skills – verbal, reading, or math -- or perhaps some combination of the three.

I am here to help you.

Below you will find some resources and links that will hopefully make this process much easier and less stressful for you and your family.

As you know by now, the university maintains minimum test score requirements for admission.  If your SAT/ACT scores were below these minimums in any of the three basic areas, we need to find some solutions to get you up to speed as quickly – and painlessly – as possible.  If you were admitted with Accommodations, please make sure to be in contact with both the Office of Adaptive Services and me.

We’re glad you’re here, and I’ll do everything I can to help you resolve your remediation as quickly as possible.

Options
_________________________________________________________________________________

The easiest option we can offer for attempting to resolve remediation involves “testing out.”   However, if you wish to attempt to test out, you MUST contact me first in order to be given a referral.  The FGCU testing office will not schedule anyone arriving without an advisor referral.  You may also take the test at your local community or 4 year college.  In that case, test results must be faxed directly to our testing office.  Contact me for more information.  Now, let’s take a deeper look at your options in each remediation category…

READING

With reading, you can first try to test out by taking the Reading CPT.  View a sample test here.  In order to pass and have your remedial hold removed, you must score an 83 or higher.  If you score less than an 83, you have three other options.

  • The first is to re take the ACT hoping for a Reading score of 18 or higher.
  • The second is to take a remedial reading course such as REA 9003 at Edison College (or a comparable course at your local community college).
  •  There is one last possibility for meeting reading remediation.  This option is at the remedial advisor’s sole discretion and will be considered only after your reading CPT score report is reviewed.

Please e-mail me for more information on any of these options.

ENGLISH

As with reading, you can take the English CPT (sample) You will want to look at the grammar tests and the ones on sentence structure, and as with reading you must earn an 83 or better to have the hold removed.  If you do not, you may…

  • Retake either the ACT or SAT hoping for a higher score (440 SAT, 17 ACT)
  • Take a remedial English course such as ENC 9020 or 9021 at Edison College or your local community college.

Please e-mail me for more information on either option.

MATH

All incoming freshman are required to take the MPT – math placement test -- at or before Eagle View Orientation, but since you need to resolve a remediation hold, I suggest taking the Accuplacer Elementary Algebra CPT as soon as possible.  That way if you don’t score a 72 or higher, you have time to pursue other options.

  • Option one is to retake the SAT or ACT hoping for a higher score (440 SAT, 19 ACT)
  • Option two is to take a remedial math course such as MAT 9024 at Edison College or your local community college.

Please e-mail me for more information on either option: KVERDERA@FGCU.EDU
