GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
The university experience at FGCU is designed to prepare students for
a rapidly changing world and workplace where professional careers demand
a wide breadth of knowledge, critical thinking, and communication skills.
This preparation begins at FGCU with General Education Program.
The General Education Program consists of 36 credit hours of coursework
in the subject areas of communications, social sciences, humanities,
natural sciences, and mathematics. A full list of courses that fulfill
these requirements is included in this handbook. Recall that the lower
division consists of 60 credit hours. The General Education Program
comprises 36 credit hours of the total 60 lower level credits, leaving
24 hours of electives to meet lower division requirements. A tracking
checklist is included in this handbook.
DUAL ENROLLMENT AND ADVANCED PLACEMENT CREDIT
Credits earned from Dual
Enrollment, CLEP, Advanced Placement (AP),
and/or International Baccalaureate (IB) programs will be evaluated by
FGCU and may satisfy general education courses (for example, ENC 1101).
Evaluation of prior coursework is evaluated once official transcripts
are received with corresponding grades or scores.
MATHEMATICS
It is policy at FGCU that all entering students will undergo a
math
placement test (MPT) prior to being enrolled in any mathematics course.
Students living within the FGCU service area are required to take the
assessment prior to orientation. Out of area students may make arrangements
to be tested during orientation. An appropriate math course will be
determined from the results of the MPT. A student may be placed in a
required remedial math course, for which he or she will not receive
academic credit.
REMEDIAL COURSEWORK
Students may be required to take
remedial coursework based on advisor
evaluation of the student's admissions test scores on the ACT and/or
the SAT. Your advisor will discuss your test scores during orientation.
