FREQUENTLY ASKED ADVISING QUESTIONS
(Click here for more Frequently Asked Questions)

WHO IS MY ADVISOR?
During your freshman year, your academic counselor will be in First Year Advising Services.

Kristin Verderamo:   KVERDERA@FGCU.EDU

Adam Musolino :     AMUSOLIN@FGCU.EDU

Once the first 24 credits have been completed, students are transitioned to a college advisor for advisement. Undeclared students will transfer to the College of Arts & Sciences for advising.

HOW DO I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO SEE MY ADVISOR?
Call First Year Advising Services (239-590-7875) and ask to make an appointment with your advisor. Our program assistant, will schedule your appointment. If you cannot make the appointment, please call to cancel. We can see walk-in students, although we encourage all students to make appointments.

CAN I TAKE COURSES AT ANOTHER UNIVERSITY TO TRY AND IMPROVE MY GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)?
You may take courses at other colleges and universities; however, transfer grades are not included in your FGCU GPA. They may, however be accepted for academic credit and may count towards meeting degree requirements.

CAN I SKIP CLASSES?
The instructor for each class determines attendance policy. This policy will be discussed during the first class session, if not, be sure to ask. Missing classes is never a good idea; however, circumstances beyond your control may require that you miss a lecture. Always let your instructor know and have a classmate take notes so that you do not get behind.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY MAJOR?
Make an appointment to see an academic counselor who will help you complete a change of major form. Once completed, your major will be changed in the university computer system.

WHAT IS A FRESHMAN HOLD?
All students will have an AF or freshman advising hold on their student accounts and will make scheduling adjustments through first year advisors until they are within the semester in which they will complete at least 24 credit hours: within this semester they will then meet with their upper division college advisor.  Upon meeting with their college advisor students will be acclimated per their major choice and program of study and will develop an academic plan.  After this meeting the college advisor will remove the AF hold and students will have the freedom to web register (see academic calendar link below for open registration dates):http://enrollment.fgcu.edu/registration/AcademicCalendar.htm
Students may access information about other types of holds by reviewing the student hold key

WHAT IS PROBATION?
Students are considered to be on probation if their cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0. The Office of the Registrar will notify the student who is required to make an appointment with his/her advisor. Students on probation will have holds on their computer record that will not allow registration without advisor's recommendation for coursework. "Prescriptive" advising is required until the student re-establishes a cumulative GPA of 2.0.  Students on academic warning and probation are required to participate in the Center for Academic Assistance Academic Retention Program.
