A.A.: This acronym stands for an "Associate of Arts" degree,
which can be earned at most two-year colleges. It is essentially the first
two years of a four-year bachelor's degree. Requirements
at FGCU are outlined here.
ACT: This is a test published by American College Testing, which measures
a student's aptitude in mathematical and verbal comprehension and problem
solving. Some colleges require this test or the SAT for admission. (See
below for explanation of SAT.) Most students take the ACT
(FGCU ACT code: 0733) or the SAT
(FGCU SAT code: 5221) during
their junior or senior year of high school.
Audit: A regular credit course taken for no credit. Registration fees
remain the same and students must attend all classes.
B.A. or B.S.: B.A. stands for "Bachelor of Arts," and B.S. stands
for "Bachelor of Science." Both degrees can be earned at four-year
colleges. Some colleges only grant B.A.degrees and others only grant B.S.
degrees depending on the types of courses offered at the particular college.
C.L.A.S.T.: (College Level Academic Skills Test) CLAST is a State of Florida
test of college level competency in writing, English grammar, reading
and mathematics required of students who have earned a minimum of 18 credit
hours. It is recommended that students take CLAST after completion of
all Gordon Rule English and math courses. The test is usually taken in
the sophomore year.
C.L.A.S.T. Alternative: An exemption from the CLAST based upon a 2.5 GPA
in specified courses, or test scores on the SAT or ACT. Education majors
cannot use the CLAST Alternative.
C.L.E.P: (College Level Examination Program) CLEP is a testing program
provided by the College Board in which college credit may be awarded in
specific academic areas. Specific CLEP award information can be found
in the 2008 - 2009 FGCU catalog.
Co-requisite: A course that must be taken in the same semester as another
designated course.
Credit Hour: A unit which represents the number of hours a student spends
in class each week over the course of a spring or fall semester. Example:
A student enrolled in ENC 1101 (3 credits) will spend approximately 3
hours in class per week each week for approximately 16 weeks.
CRN: (Course Reference Number) A 5 digit number assigned to designate a specific
class and the specific time/format in which it will be offered. CRN's
are critical for course registration. Fall CRN's begin with 8,
Spring with 1, and summer with 5.
Drop/Add Period: The period during which students may drop or add a course
without penalty. The drop/add period has a published deadline (see
academic calendar). It is highly recommended that
students consult the FGCU catalog or an academic counseling when dropping
or adding a course. It is important to note that dropping a course may
change a student's status from full time to part time.
Access drop/add form here.
Fees: Charges that cover costs not associated with the student's course
load, such as costs of lab materials, etc.
Financial Aid: Financial aid in this handbook refers to money available
from various sources to help students pay for college. Students should
always check in with the
Financial Aid Office if their academic or registration
status changes after the drop and add period.
Foreign Language Requirement: An admission requirement of Florida State
universities that requires two years of the same foreign language at the
high school level. If admitted without foreign language credit 8-10 credit
hours must be taken at the college level as part of the degree requirement.
Students are responsible for knowing whether they are required to take
foreign language as a degree requirement, and may consult with an Academic
Counselor regarding their status.
Full-time student: Enrollment for 12 or more credit hours in fall or spring
semesters.
General Education (checklist): The General Education Program at Florida Gulf Coast
University, in accordance with state mandates, consists of 36 semester
hours of coursework in the subject areas of communication, mathematics,
social science, humanities, and natural sciences.
Subject Area Distribution:
Area I Communication 6 semester hours
Area II Mathematics 6 semester hours
Area III Humanities 9 semester hours
Area IV Social Sciences 6 or 9 semester hours
Area V Natural Sciences 6 or 9 semester hours
(Please refer to the general education section for specific
coursework accepted for general education requirements).
Students who transfer from Florida's Community Colleges or Florida's public
universities with an AA degree have met the general education distribution.
Other transfers are required to fulfill 36 hours of coursework in General
Education in the five subject areas as listed above.
Gordon Rule (State rule 6A10.30): All students must complete the Gordon Rule requirement. The Gordon Rule
has two components, a writing component and a computation component. Students
with an AA degree from Florida public college or university have met this
requirement.

G.P.A.: (Grade Point Average) Numerical value gained by dividing total quality
points earned by total number of credit hours attempted. Click

Grade Forgiveness Policy (form): Students may apply for grade forgiveness through
the Office of
First Year Advising. The policy permits an undergraduate,
degree or non-degree seeking student to repeat a course in which: An original
grade of C- or lower has been recorded; The repeated grade is D or higher;
Only the repeated course grade will be used in the computation of GPA; The
repeated course grade will not be applied in the calculation of GPA for
Honors for Graduation; The original course was taken at FGCU and the original
grade was received Fall 2000 or subsequent terms, and the repeat course
was taken at FGCU subsequent to Fall 2000.
