Glossary H-Z
Lower Division: Pertaining to freshman and sophomore status where the
student has earned 0 - 60 credit hours.
Part-time Student: Enrollment for less than 12 credit hours in fall or
spring semesters.
Pre-requisite: A course which must be satisfactorily completed before
entering a higher level related course.
Quality Points: The value, ranging from '4' to '0' for grades 'A' to 'F'
multiplied by the number of credits from a particular course. (Example:
3 credits X A (4 points) = 12 quality points. Quality points are used
in determining grade point average (GPA). Click here
for our GPA Calculator.
Registration:
Freshmen may web register via
Gulfline after completing orientation until the end of the add/drop
period. Course withdraw requests after the add/drop period must be
done in consult with a
First Year
Advisor.
Repeat Course Surcharge: A State Board of Education rule states that a
surcharge be imposed on students who repeat a course two times beyond
the repeatable limit. For example, if a course can be repeated twice,
a student will be assessed the surcharge after the third attempt. The
surcharge will be 100% of the full cost of instruction. Only courses repeated
at FGCU will count in attempts. Transfer course work will not count in
the repeat calculation. Grades of "W", "WF", and "I"
earned at FGCU will count when figuring attempts.
Residency Requirement: Requirement that 30 out of the last 60 hours must
be taken at FGCU for award of a degree.
SAT: The Scholastic Aptitude Test, which is a test that measures a student's
aptitude in mathematical and verbal comprehension and problem solving.
Many colleges in the East and West require students to take the SAT and
to submit their test scores when they apply for admission. Some colleges
accept this test or the ACT. (See above for an explanation of the ACT.)
Most students take the SAT or the ACT during their junior or senior year
of high school.
Scholarship: A scholarship is a sum of money given to a student for the
purpose of paying at least part of the cost of college. Scholarships can
be awarded to students based on students' academic achievements or on
many other factors.
Semester: Time period during which classes meet. Fall and spring semesters
are approximately 16 weeks in duration. Summer semesters usually run shorter
and therefore fewer classes are taken per term.
Student Course Load: The number of credit hours carried each semester.
Summer Semester Hours: First-time-in-college students and transfer students
with less than 60 credit hours must register for 9 credits in a summer
term at a Florida public university before graduation.
Transcript (request
form): A list of all the courses a student has taken with the grades
that the student earned in each course. A college will often require a
student to submit his or her high school transcript when the student applies
for admission to the college. It is important that dual enrollment, advanced
placement, and CLEP credit is official submitted to the University for
evaluation and inclusion on the FGCU transcript.
Transfer Student: A student who has attended another post-secondary educational
institution.
Transient Student (form): A student who
wishes to attend classes at one education
institution to complete degree requirements and coursework at another
institution. Permission must be approved by an advisor to be in transient student status.
NOTE: Students may complete the transient form process online via
the FACTS.ORG website-

here for instructions on completing an electronic transient form request.
Tuition: The amount of money that colleges charge for classroom and other
instruction and use of some facilities such as libraries. Tuition usually
is charged by the credit hour.
Upper Division: Pertains to junior and senior status in which the student
has earned between 60 - 120 credit hours.
Withdrawal (form):
The withdraw form is used when a student intends
to completely withdraw from all courses. Complete withdraws done prior to
or during the add/drop period result in 100% refund. Complete withdraws
done after the add/drop period may result in 25% refund if deadline is met- see
academic
calendar. Students withdrawing for medical circumstances or other
extenuating circumstances may wish to consider completing the
fee
adjustment request form.
Work-Study Programs: These programs are offered by many colleges. They
allow students to work part time during the school year as part of their
financial aid package. These jobs are usually on campus.
